Ships Have Sailed release their eagerly awaited EP 'Whispers'...and it's awesome!
After interviewing Ships Have Sailed (you can check the interview with Will and Dan out here) following their award winning singles I- like many- was stuck hitting replay on 'Midnight' and 'Drive'. Now their five track EP Whispers is finally here, and, far from simply satisfying our hunger for new tracks, it's everything we anticipated and more.
The first track 'Lucky' is sensitively questioning and has a piano melody that I could rhapsodize about for hours. While, 'Home', is just one of those raw tunes that makes your hairs stand on end and hits you in the pit of your stomach. I really like the stripped down composition on this track, the guitar is more powerful in it's simplicity and works perfectly with singer Will Carpenter's gorgeous vocals to create something that is organically moving.
Relying on a band's natural talent and lyricism can be a risk, but for Ships Have Sailed it has more than paid off. Especially on the extended version of 'Criminal' which has this fantastically soft introduction that leads perfectly into a crisply delivered track with hints of folk creeping in at just the right places. This is what I love most about this EP- it's confident stripped down style. It allows the EP to highlight their inherent talent and understanding of the mechanics of creating affecting music, that has been present since their earliest releases. It's refreshing to see such a talented band take it back to basics, executing them perfectly and avoiding the traps of over-production many musicians fall into. Proving, sometimes whispers can be more moving than the loudest, flashiest screams!
Whispers is available now on iTunes!
