MURS sets world record for longest rap session after rapping over 24 hours!
As he hit 19:30:00 he burst into his hit Okey Dog with defiant energy: then I knew Murs (Nicholas Carter) would smash this world record. The record was undertaken to celebrate his 20th year in the music industry, in partnership with Boost Mobile, who Murs just became the face for their new music streaming offer. With nine solo albums (including 2015's smash Have A Nice Life), being part of collaboration Felt with Slug since 2002 and his previous success as part of the Living Legends, it seems fitting that the influential independent LA artist should be the one to set this record.
The mammoth playlist was a true greatest of the last few decades of hip hop (you can see the track listing here), which Murs executed masterfully considering how varied the tunes were, stand out tracks to me were:
Black Sheep- Flavor of the Month, Nas - Life's a Bitch, Public Enemy- Fight The Power, Pharcyde- Outta Fish, The White Mandingos- Black Girl Toof, Tha Dogg Pound- New York,New York, Onyx- Slam, Kriss Kross- Jump, 2pac - Hail Mary, Westside Connection- Bow Down, Cypress Hill- Something You Just Can't Understand.
Plus a great mix of his own tracks, such as: Risky Business, Okey Dog, Mursday, Two-Step, The Battle, L.A., Silly Girl, 3:16, Lookin' Fly, God Black/Black God, Woke Up Dead, Black Girls Be Like.
The physical feat is impressive in itself, awesome in it's true sense, the exhaustion that must have been setting in, after 20 hours we started to hear his voice gain a grated sound, vocal chords strained it was inspiring seeing someone remain so positive and chill undertaking something so difficult. It looked as though he was practising a verbal form of meditation, fusing with the beat and moving between a fantastic tracklist's bars with ease.
20:40 :00 he took a small break - for a smoke and food - the rules state 5 mins an hour or 10 mins if he waited two hours, during which he said he was slightly out of sorts but hoped we were enjoying the feat- adding "you better be amazed", unnecesarily, as chat pointed out we already were. Shortly after there were a few technical issues but the whole time we could just hear him rapping and could still see the rapper spitting continuously. At 21:18:00 he seemed to find new legs jumping behind his chair to spit his hit Two Step with a smile and bounce going onto an inspirational rendition of his track The Battle.
22:00:00 chat starts going nuts about how Murs has stayed on beat for 22 hours straight. At 23 hours chat began scrolling fast as people congratulated him, the end in sight Murs seemed to find renew strength, still barely missing a beat or lyric, which is beyond impressive. The earlier strains in his voice are barely visible, he wipes his eyes occasionally but seems to find strength in matching the beat and is staying playful with his execution of his rap.
At 23:45:00 we heard an amazing and throaty rendition of Wu Tang Clang's Da Mystery of Cheesboxin'. As he smashed Wu Tang's Old Dirty Bastard & C.R.E.A.M with suprising enthusiasm Murs set the worlds record the longest rap session with style and substance. He finished eating a pizza with the pizza guy from the whole stream, singing a freestyle version of his Better Than The Best and a freestyle version of his track Dirty Girl- fun til the end!
There is no doubt now that Murs just confirmed his place as Hip Hop royalty, proving his skills and passion for the game in an inspiring and olympian feat of love for the art. I certainly felt I was watching music history being made on this grey Thursday.
