Interview w/ Dynamos: the new band with a rock 'n' roll soul
Occasionally when surfing the waves of YoutTube it will throw up a rare gem, most recently while clicking interesting titles or thumbnails I had the joy of discovering the stylings of Dynamos. Dynamos is made up of of Nick Schaadt (music director, bass), Jacob
Mayeda (guitars), Ian Nakazawa (drums percussion), Carlos Barrera
(guitars), and fronted by the capitvating energy and vocals of Nadia E.
As their new single Shake, Rattle and Roll gains traction with audiences I reached out to the band to find out a little more about what makes them tick, Nadia was kind enough to lift the veil on these mysterious newcomers:
1.
I adore the band’s style you guys look very
alive on stage; how did you guys meet and decide to become the Dynamos?
I had a part time job and a coworker said she was a
vocalist and was going to audition for a project with a fantastic songwriter
and producer. I told her I also sang and she invited me to go with her. I loved
the music and instantly related to the lyrics. I learned a couple of the songs
and they later auditioned me. They said my interpretation and presentation of
the material matched exactly what they were looking for and I became the lead
vocalist of the DYNAMOS.
2.
There’s a real retro rock n’ roll element to
your sound with a delicious riot grrrl edge, which musicians or singers would
you say have inspired you?
I
am Inspired by the vocal styling of Otis Redding, Amy Winehouse, and Janis
Joplin. I also love Debbie Harry and Blondie. I love the image of Blondie and
find I unknowingly steer towards Debbie Harry’s look.
3.
It feels like rocks moved away from the more
cheeky and energetic roots, would you describe your sound as maybe more free and celebratory?
We approach each song as an independent entity. How I
feel and how I perform is totally dependent on the song content. Our sound
matches that particular song, so therefore, our songs have a wide range of
emotions.
4.
Do you guys have any weird habits or rituals as
a band?
We
do this silly thing during breaks at rehearsal of shooting hoops into the trash
can with water bottles. Sort of competing to see who sinks it in. It’s childish
fun.
5.
How’d you come up with the title Shake, Rattle
and Roll? Is it a little nod to Eric Clapton?
Our “Shake Rattle and Roll” has no connection to Eric
Clapton, even though he is a major musical influence for us. The title simply
sums up the meaning of the song. It’s about being overwhelmingly turned on by
someone when getting down.
6.
What projects have you guys got on the horizon?
We have just recorded our new single “Stainless” and
are currently in the process of shooting the “Stainless” video. We are
expecting an end of February release. I also have a couple of photo shoots
coming up. I was very inspired by our songs when designing the costumes. Each
costume corresponds to a specific DYNAMOS tune.
Also, we are rehearsing for our live shows this spring and summer.
7.
Anything you’d like to plug or shoutouts to
people?
Come
see us live! The guys are truly amazing musicians and we have great songs that
we love playing! We have a blast performing and we want to share the fun!
8.
Who are you listening to at the moment? Recommend
our readers some bangers!
Lately,
I’ve been listening to Joyce Manor. I really dig their songs, especially from
their album “Never Hung Over Again”
