Review: Second season of Jessica Jones delivers another knockout punch (Spoiler Free)

Given the mesmerising battle between everyone's favourite neo-noir PI and Killgrave in season one, it was difficult to see where the writers would take Jessica and her motley crew in a second season. How do you create tension or stakes when our hero's own mind was on the line before? When she was facing a man who not only had destroyed years of her life but also had the ability to turn anyone against themselves? Well it would seem the answer is you go deeper, you pull out some emotional sucker punches and dissect what makes the characters tick.

The season opens with a pretty slow yet intensley interesting first four or five episodes, in these the audience is caught up with the events since Killgrave's demise and the public's reaction to the knowledge of co-existing with "super powered vigilantes" like Jessica. Yet it quickly gains pace as we begin to learn more about Jessica's origins and why she is so torn between a desire to save the world and shut it out.

Addiction, ethics and the ties that bind friends and family are explored through each character in paralell, through each of their different reactions to these demons the underlying causes are revealed. Which is the genius of the adaption of this comic book series, like no other it underlines what it is to be deeply flawed and human- whether it's through Jones or a faceless New Yorker she encounters.

Although it hasn't yet been officially renewed for a third season by Netflix it took them a couple of years to produce this second season and their other Marvel shows are currently in production. I for once certainly hope we are going to see more of the most badass woman to grace the silver screen in years, expertly brought to life in eye rolls and displeased looks by Krysten Ritter.
